Comments by Bob Steber

Make your dream come true and join your fellow Alabeemers in Nauvoo, Alabama for the March rumble in Nauvoo. We will take over this old mining town for two days, and while there, enjoy the hospitality of Gene and Eurlene McDaniel, owners of the Old Harbin Hotel and most of the rest of town. They will prepare a hardy breakfast for us on Saturday and Sunday mornings and dinner Friday and Saturday night. Breakfast is included with the daily tent camping charge of $10.00, and dinners will be $12.00. Friday night’s dinner will be a BBQ feast from the famous Slick Lizard BBQ restaurant located near Nauvoo. Saturday night will be home made country cooking with all the trimmings. The meals will be served in the hotel ballroom.

Breakfast is also included with the hotel accommodations and full hook-up RV camping which is $16.00 per night. All of the Hotel rooms are booked by our club members, but there is a waiting list in case someone cancels. There is a little motel in Natural Bridge, AL, the Natural Bridge Motel which is 11 miles north of Nauvoo on Alabama 5. I have not been there and can’t vouch for the room quality. The rates are low though. (Tel. # (205) 486-5261). Other motels are available in Jasper, about 18 miles SE of Nauvoo.

We will go for a group ABEES exploring ride Saturday morning leaving from in front of the Old Harbin Hotel at 9:00 am to see the Natural Bridge (small admission charge) and from there, ride some great back-roads to the Dismals Canyon near Phil Campbell, Alabama. Lunch will be at Grace’s Place in Hackleburg before touring the Dismals. Our ride back to Nauvoo will be over more great back-roads returning around 4 pm and will be 91 miles round trip.

Dismals Canyon (www.dismalscanyon.com/thecanyon/index.html) offers a quiet and unspoiled oasis in Alabama’s last secret hiding place. It is in a secluded wilderness filled with natural phenomena tucked deep within the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Our visit is a step back to the time when the earth was clean and the water was clear. Aside from the necessary clearing of the trails, the area is now - as it has been for centuries - completely natural. Its waterfalls, natural bridges, cliffs and boulders give this place a mysterious ambiance. Until an ice storm destroyed one of them, twin Canadian Hemlocks towered up from the canyon floor. One of them remains and looks sturdy and healthy for its 350 years. It is 138’ tall, 8’9” around and has a crown spread of 50’. It is the largest of its species in Alabama and thought to be the largest anywhere in the world.

The hike through Dismals Canyon is about 1 ½ miles, but not difficult and will take about 2 hours allowing time to stop to admire the wonderful scenery. There is an admission charge of $ 9.00 for adults with a $1.00 discount for seniors 60 and older.

Please let Connie know which night(s) you plan to camp and which meals you want. Also, please tell her if you are going on the Saturday morning ride.

Bob's comments - We have a fun ride planned for you at our Guntersville July 26 campout.

The ride has it all; great scenery, elevation changes, fast sweepers, s-turns, hairpins, waterfalls, old churches, painted rock garden, the best cheeseburger in the state and lots of excitement. Please be suited up and ready to roll with a full tank of fuel and an empty bladder.

The total distance is 191 miles and we should return to the campground by 4 pm. We will check off 10 ABEES points along the way. For folks who would like to make it a shorter ride, it will be easy to go back to the campground after lunch at the Pikeville Store and Deli (5 ABEES check offs plus additional ones in Scottsboro).

Gary DuBois will lead a short ride (about 2 hours) to Bucks Pocket SP and Dekalb High Falls followed by lunch somewhere. Departure time for this ride is 10:00 from the campground.

The GPS coordinate for the entrance to the the farm on Bell Branch Trail is N35 51.776 W87 25.984

From Connie:

  • Lee says there will be a T.W.O. bridge just downstream of the water crossing which was previously the only way to go. He has just built this bridge to have it in time for our meeting. So you have the option of fording the creek (3 inches deep) or crossing the bridge depending on your bike and needs.
  • No showers
  • It's got a creek (it's a clean creek - hehe)
  • Beer, ice and food about 1-1/2 mile away - but NO HARD LIQUOR - so bring that with you if you want it.
  • Three tenths of a mile of well maintained hard packed dirt road to the farm. Not at all hard to navigate.
  • Days Inn called "Stay Inn" about 5 miles on Hwy 100. Phone 931-729-5600 - 643 David St., Centerville, TN 37033
  • Plenty of place for tents, trailers and cars if you must
  • Lay of the land is slightly sloping with a few level spots and it's grassy.
  • There is a little church that can be used if bad weather.
  • No power available
  • Lee has a 20 x 40 shelter built with cedar poles and a tarp.

PRICE: $10.00 gate fee and a tip jar for the cooks who are neighbors and not affiliated with the BMW clubs. The Kermit Chair Co, is going to try to pick up the food but it may be a bit much for one small company. The Nashville club is paying for the porta-potties.

Check out the Nashville club website www.bmwmcon.org which our own Steve Schuckman does for them. For our new folks, Steve is our Webmaster.

Lee has requested a head count by the 20th of October so do not wait to sign up till that Thursday PLEASE ! I will be sending out the E-news for the head count soon. AND he would like to know if you will arrive on Friday or Saturday.

The Main Lodge will accommodate our group for dinner and the Dirty Santa game afterwards, and lodging is adjacent to, or near that building so no driving will be necessary after dinner if you are staying on the property.

We have a Group Code of CGBMWM that must be used when making reservations. Twenty rooms are available for the one night and 2 chalets are still available. Reservations can be made up to one month before the arrival date of December 13, and also can be canceled within that same period. If by November 13th all of the rooms and chalets are not booked, Darlene will cancel any that remain.

The number to call for reservations is 256-571-5440.

If you try to make reservations before November 13 and are told that the rooms and chalets are booked, or are told that there will be a two night minimum stay, first make sure you give the person the Group Code but if still unable to book then e-mail Darlene at dmassey@amerex-fire.com and she will call the Sales Manager to resolve the issue.

Reservations after November 13 will probably require a two night minimum.

For dinner we will have a private buffet line that will be serving the following:

  • Steamship Round of Beef carved on the buffet line
  • Baked Chicken
  • Coleslaw
  • Broccoli Salad
  • Tossed Salad
  • Antipasto Salad
  • Potatoes Au Gratin
  • Italian Green Beans
  • Squash Casserole
  • Triple Hummingbird Cake
  • Fruit Cobbler
  • Coffee, tea, rolls & butter

Cost for dinner will be $12.95 each and 20% service charge and 8% sales tax for a total of $17.78 per person.

The lodge also now has a bar and drinks are priced at:

  • Mixed drinks - 4.25ea
  • Domestic beer - $3.50
  • Imported beer - $4.25
  • Most wines are 4.75 glass, some 5.75

Hotel rooms in the lodge have two queen beds and are $98 plus tax per night. The chalets sleep 1-6 people. Each is equipped with a living room with fireplace, cable TV and DVD player, kitchen, bath, and two bedrooms. One bedroom has a King bed and one has two Double beds. Cost for the chalets is $140 plus tax.

Not a bad price if you share one with another couple.
